When I was in Berkley I wrote you not only by the Wagon which carried you a load of hemp but also by Doctr Bull, that when you found it necessary to write by Post to forward them to Fredericksbg with directions for them to be sent by the rider to Leeds, but since my return to Westmoreland I am inform'd that the rider from the Post Office in Fredericksbg to that in Leeds was discontinued, and as I had recd no letter from you since that dated in Lancaster, I was induced to think that yr letters of a later date might be laying in yr Fredericksbg office and sent up to see, but there was none— I am exceedingly anxcious to hear from you, whether the Hemp got safe and how it sold—what advances have been made you by Mr Maury, he writes me of the 19th Inst that he cannot assertain his advance certainly but supposes it may be about £80, besides a letter he has wrote for Cash to be advanced which will be in addition to the above sum, and desires a reimbursment in Tobo or Cash—he having recd from me but 6,954 Tobo at 2d equal to 57.19.0 this currency— I know Mr Maury furnished you with a Bill for £25 Sterlg his brother Fontain Maury wrote me should remit you a Bill for about 80 or an hundred dollars, after this he wrote me he found it difficult to raise the Cash & had shiped to the best of my know 3 hhds Tobo the sales of which was intended for yr use, but whether this tobo has ever come to hand and you benifited by it I am at a loss, as I am also to know whether Mr Meads advance was exclusive of the Bill or whether he reimbursed himself out of the sales of the Bill— you wrote me what the Bill sold for but I have forgot and yr letter by some means mislayed or left among my papers in berkley you will therefore please to inform me again by first oppertunity, as also of all advances, made you and what repayments of them by discount or otherwise as it is impossable for me to settle here without, and as letters are liable to miscarriage to inclose such a state in every letter it may be made very short, also state of what you may be owing— I have wrote to Mr Thomas Greigs who has the management of my Berkley business to get my Hemp broak as fast as possable, but I fear the severity of the winter must be over before Wagons can be obtain'd to carry it, I will as soon as I get Tobo inspected shi<p them> to the head of Elk, if the Bay should be tolorably clair of the Enemy which is not th<mutilated> present Potomak has been visited by 5 Barges of <mutilated> once or twice lately as hig[h] as Yeocomico— I wish I could fall on some regular plan of remiting myself and hope early this spring I shall be able to accomplish it for in the manner it is done by the Merchants it is very uncertain and attended with loss to me— for instance the tobo I paid Mr Maury cost me better then 40/pr. hhd to get it down and the price not higher then I could have got in Berkley— his Bill after laying on hand a long time sold low and I expect he will demand of me what it cost here— I cannot learn from Capt.
