Description

James Maury, brother of Fontaine Maury and uncle of Matthew Fontaine Maury, was born on 14 February 1746 in Albemarle County, Virginia. A childhood classmate and friend of Thomas Jefferson, he worked as a merchant/importer in Fredericksburg and Liverpool. In 1790 President George Washington appointed him U.S. consul at Liverpool, a post he would hold for almost forty years.
