Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
Bushrod Washington corresponded with and did occasional legal work for Jefferson, who served under Bushrod's uncle as secretary of state.
Thomas Jefferson was born on 13 April 1743 at Shadwell, his parents’ estate in present-day Albemarle County, Virginia. He attended The College of William and Mary, studied law under George Wythe, and was admitted to the bar. His political career began with a stint in the House of Burgesses (1769–75), during which time he married the widow Martha Wayles Skelton (b. 1748, m. 1772). They had two daughters who lived to maturity.
