Description

Fontaine Maury, a brother of James Maury, was born on 3 February 1761 in Albemarle County, Virginia. Following service in the Revolutionary War, he moved to Fredericksburg, where he managed a merchant house, sat as mayor for three terms, and superintended the local branch of the Bank of Richmond. Maury also handled the James Madison family business affairs in Fredericksburg. In later years he worked as a clerk in the State Department.
