Mildred Thornton Washington was an aunt of Bushrod Washington.

Description

Mildred Thornton was born on 22 June 1737 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. In 1757 she married Charles Washington (1738–1799), the youngest brother of George Washington. Mildred and Charles lived in Fredericksburg for some years before moving to Berkeley County (in present-day West Virginia), where the couple built a house they named Happy Retreat. Mildred Thornton Washington died on 28 October 1804, survived by three of her four children with Charles. In 1973 Happy Retreat was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
