Elizabeth Willing Powel (1742/431830)

Powel was a regular correspondent of Bushrod Washington, for whom she purchased a set of black satin robes for his position as associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Description

Elizabeth Willing, sister of Thomas Willing, was the daughter of a Quaker merchant and mayor. Her marriage in 1769 to Samuel Powel united two of the wealthiest families in Philadelphia, and she became one of the city’s most prominent salonnières. Willing corresponded with and befriended leading political figures of the day, including George Washington.
