Description

Samuel Powel was born in Philadelphia on 28 August 1738. A graduate of what is now the University of Pennsylvania, he was president of the American Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge and a co-founder of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture. He also served as a justice on the Court of Common Pleas and member of the Pennsylvania State Senate (1791–93). Powel has the distinction of being the last colonial-era mayor of Philadelphia (1775–76) and the first mayor of the city after independence (1789–90).
