Smith Thompson (1768–1843)
Thompson and Bushrod Washington were colleagues on the U.S. Supreme Court for six years.
Smith Thompson, Supreme Court associate justice, was born on 17 January 1768 in Amenia, New York. A graduate of present-day Princeton University, he practiced law in Troy and Poughkeepsie. After a brief stint as a state assemblyman, Thompson sat on the New York State Supreme Court (1802–18) and served as secretary of the Navy (1818–23).
