My Dear Sir

I have been in the Country for two months, returned here yesterday, and am obliged to leave this tomorrow morning on my Connecticut Circuit, And I have not been able to obtain the information you wish respecting the School on Long Island. Immediately on my return which will probably be in a few days, I will make the Enquiry and write you— I presume the School to which you allude is at Jamaica. Its character has stood high, but my impression is that the Principal who I believe was Mr Mughlenburgh, has lately died and if so I cannot speak with any certainty as to his successor, I will make it my business however to ascertain all about it and let you know— There is a Gentleman by the name of Allen, who keeps a school of a limited and select number— 80 or 90 miles up the north river at Hyde Park, which I think I could recommend, if not full at this time— He boards all his scholars and has them under his immediate care the whole time, I am not able to say what the expense is—

The friends of the Administration need be under no apprehension with respect to any alteration in our electoral law, it will not be touched— We shall elect by Districts, and the result is very uncertain, each party claims a majority of the electors, and I cannot undertake to express any decided opinion on the subject.

You have probably seen that the administration party here, have put me in nomination for Governor, This was done without my consent and against my wishes—And after the nomination was made I should have publicly declined, had it not been, that it would have thrown the party into confusion, and put at hazard some of the Presidential electors— It is a circumstance I most sincerely regret, particularly if I should be so unfortunate as to be elected.

I was much shocked at noticing the death of our brother Trimble— In this dispensation of Providence, the Country has sustained a great loss & was deprived of a most agreeable companion. I am with very great respect & esteem Your obdt Servt
