William Augustus Muhlenberg (1796–1877)
William Augustus Muhlenberg, Episcopal clergyman and educator, was born in Philadelphia on 16 September 1796. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1820. Thereafter he was rector at Saint James Church (Lancaster, PA), St. George's Church (Flushing, Queens), and the Church of the Holy Communion (Manhattan). While at St. George's, Muhlenberg headed the Flushing Institute and St. Paul's College, schools that served as models for future educators. He also founded St. Luke's Hospital (estd. 1850), now known as Mount Sinai Morningside.
