Description

Benjamin Allen was born on 8 October 1772 in Kingston, Rhode Island. A 1797 graduate of Rhode Island College (now Brown University), he briefly tutored at that institution before his appointment as Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Union College in Schenectady, New York. He thereafter worked as principal of Dummer Academy (Byfield, MA), principal of The Albany Academy, and Professor of Ancient Languages at the University of Pennsylvania.
