Mason Locke Weems (1759–1825)

Mason Locke "Parson" Weems, biographer of George Washington, was born on 11 October 1759 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the youngest of his father's nineteen children. After training for the Anglican ministry in England, he returned to the U.S. and worked as an Episcopal rector, itinerant preacher/fiddler, and agent for publisher Mathew Carey. Weems also wrote numerous books and pamphlets, including A History of the Life and Death, Virtues and Exploits of General George Washington.
