George Carter (1777–1846)
George Carter and Bushrod Washington exchanged several letters regarding a debt owed to the former by one of the latter's nephews.
George Carter, a son of Robert Carter and great-grandson of Robert "King" Carter, was born on 31 January 1777 at Nomini Hall, the family mansion in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Following study at present-day Brown University, Carter drew on his father’s Loudon County land holdings to establish a plantation he would call "Oatlands." At Oatlands Carter worked as many as eighty-five slaves to grow wheat, raise sheep, and cultivate a vineyard. The plantation is now a National Trust Historic Site.
