Description

Elizabeth Schuyler was born on 9 August 1757 to a wealthy family in Albany, New York. Her father served as a major-general under George Washington. In 1780 Elizabeth married Alexander Hamilton, an aide-de-camp to Washington at the time. After the death of her husband in 1804, Elizabeth devoted her life to charitable works. In 1797 she had helped a female benevolent group organize the Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children. Nine years later, she co-founded the New York Orphan Asylum.
