Description

Samuel Lewis Southard, the son and brother of U.S. representatives, was born on 9 June 1787 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. A graduate of what is now Princeton University, he studied law and worked as a tutor in Fredericksburg, Virginia, before returning to New Jersey in 1811 to commence his legal practice. In 1815 he sat in the New Jersey state legislature, the start of a public career that included service as an associate justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court (18151820), U.S.
