From John Marshall
Richmond Aug. 6th 1823
My dear Sir
I have received the box of letters by the steam boat.
I have this day shipped on board the schoonr John Capt Buck six trunks & a box containing all the manuscript books & papers which were in my possession. I have also sent the journals of the old Congress, Ramsays history of the revolution & some volumes of the Remembrances & the life of Putnam by Humphries. I received also Gordons history of the war but cannot find it. I have no recollection of having sent it to you with the papers formerly transmitted, but as I cannot suppose that any person would take it & am unable to find it I hope that I may have sent it. If you have it not I must repeat my search.
You have not noticed that part of my former letter which asks your opinion on the propriety of arranging the letters according to their dates. I am my dear sir with esteem & affection your
J. Marshall
I had been so alarmed about the successor to our lamented brother Livingston that I am truely rejoiced to find Mr Thompson is appointed.
ALS, NjMoHP: Marshall Papers. BW addressed the letter to BW in Alexandria with the note "To be opened in the abscence of Mr Washington by Maurice Herbert esquire." The letter was postmarked in Richmond on August 6. BW endorsed the letter.
