Description

The Philadelphia Society for the Promotion of Agriculture and Agricultural Reform was founded in 1785 by a group of interested men in Philadelphia and Maryland who wanted to create an organization similar to the learned societies of Europe. The mission of the society is to "discover and disseminate the best methods of scientific farming practice." The original membership included practical farmers as well as scientists and businessmen. Richard Peters served as the organization's first president.
