To William Augustine Washington

My dear Sir

I am happy to find that you have at length got fixed at your new purchase, and I sincerely hope that in every respect, but more especially as to its healthiness it may surpass your strongest expectations.

You have certainly made a very advantageous bargain & one which must become every year more valuable. I shall make it a point to make you a visit as soon as I can with tolerable convenience leave home, and shall hope in the course of the Summer to see you & Mrs W. at this place, in which Mrs W. of M.V. unites with me.

I send you an assignment of $8000 of your legacy to be paid in bonds or mony with a power of attorney to Mr Caldwell to recieve it. These instruments seem to be all that are necessary for complying with your engagements & are quite sufficient I apprehend for making the transfer of your right to so much mony. We determined long ago not to accept any orders which the legatees might draw upon us, to avoid the labour of keeping Accounts with the payees of those orders & some risk also which might attend the acceptances[.] In consequence of this determination, we have uniformly refused to make acceptances in similar cases; however I consider the assignment & power now sent quite sufficient. I expect we shall be able to assign the bonds this fall.

The offer which I made Bushrod was the result of reflection & a perfect belief that at his time of life, with his disposition & acquirements, a course of reading with me of the sort mentioned in my former letter was preferable to any public school whatever. With a choice library to resort to, he could not fail to have a better opportunity of studying those branches of education which ought now to engage his attention. I hope he will be studious— I shall endeavour to render him so by advice— at any rate he will have less temptation to be idle or dissipated here, than in a town. with our best Complts to Mrs W., I am with best wishes for your health & hers Your affect. friend

Bushrod Washington

Give our love to our Niece Nancy & tell her we are extremely anxious to see her, & hope she will spend a large Share of her time with us whilst she is up— Mr R. I understand has gone to Bath.
