From John Augustine Washington

My dear Bushrod

I am still in this place but hope to get away today, I wrote you by Genl Williams on the 21 or 22 inclosing you a Bill for £75 which I doubt not you have recd before this, it was unlucky I did not think to write to you by the first Stage from this place, as by that means I should have been shore to have heard from you before I left Baltimore, and as it is, there seams to be little or no prospect— I had hopes when I came here that I could have fixed it down with some Merchant of this place that upon my shiping them Tobo to have intitled you to draw on them, but there is such quantities of Tobo sent here from Virginia and other places that the Market seams to be growing dull, and of course it might be a bad way of selling tobo considering the large expence of its exportation and other incident expences— I am told that good Virginia Tobo sells as high as 8 and 10 Dollars pr Ct in Philadelphia but possably this may be over before Tobo could be got there— in every letter you write me I should be glad you would mention the Philadelphia price of Tobo, Wheat, Flour, & Hemp, if you were to write me once in every fortnight and inclose the letter to Mr Danl Grant of this place, I will speak to him to get the letters forwarded by some of our small Vessels that are every hands turn comeing here from Potomack— I mention this as only one way of conveying letters; imbrace every oppertunity besides, once a fortnight I woud wish you to write by post to Fredericksbg as we are made very happy be hearing from you frequently, and it is necessary for me to know your wants, that I may try to relieve them— I got letters from your Mama and Billy Washington last night, they were well, yr Mama is exceedingly anxcious to get your picture; if it is done, she requests in her letter that I would get it & bring it with me, but this is impossable, neither can I advise you what will be the safest mode of conveyance it sertainly ought to come under the care of some person who could be relyed upon—possably to send it by water to the head of Elk with very perticular directions to Mr Zebulon Hollinsworth not to trust it but by a person who would ingage to deliver it safe to me, or else to this place to the care of Mr Jessy Hollinsworth, if you take either of these conveyances you must be shore to have the picture carefully cared up, and get your Neighbour Mr Levy Hollinsworth to write to which ever of his brothers the picture is sent to the care of. may every happiness attend you is the ardent wish of my Dear Bushrod Your very Aff. Father

John A. Washington
