To Lawrence Lewis

Dear Sir—

Since my last, I have had a conversation with Majr Lewis, upon the proposition which you made relative to the sale of R Hall. We are both anxious to swell the piece of the property to a sum at least sufficient to cover our whole demand, not only on account of Colo. Lees estate but to render unnecessary our application to the Chancellor to subject that estate to the payment of the deficiency. Influenced by these considerations we shall consent to set up the land on the terms of 1/3 cash & the residue to be paid with interest from the date at 1,283 equal annual instalments to be secured by a deed of Trust on the property & any further security we may require provided. The Commissioners will agree to sell on these terms but as it is possible though hardly probable, that the Chancellor may refuse to confirm the sale, which, in that event might afford Mr A an opportunity to appeal, (but which for the reasons mentioned to you in my letter to you we are determined if possible to prevent) we shall require of you and Mr Alexander a bond with a penalty conditioned not to appeal or cause and appeal to be prayed or presented. Mr Herbert who is just from Jefferson informs me that the Land selling well is flattering provided some credit is given; I hope nevertheless that you have not been inattentive to the advice given in my1 letter to diffuse through the back Coun- of Maryland and Pennsylvania a knowledge of the sale.
