My dear Cousin
On the other side is a refunding bond for you to execute together with at least one sufficient Surety. Upon your forwarded the bond so executed (if by mail, the postage to be paid) to Mr William Brown, Cashier of the branch Valley bank of Virga. at Charlestown, Jefferson County, he will pay your draft for the sum stated in the Condition on the bond, viz $389.57. You will please have the blanks left for the surety’s name & the date of the bond filled up. one witness to the bond will be sufficient.
If I were not just about departing for bath the above communication would have been made in person, as I feel extremely anxious to know how you are in health. God grant that it may be speedily & permanently restored. I am my dear Cousin most sincerely yr. affect. relation & friend.

ALS: ViMtvL, Lawrence Lewis Family Papers. BW addressed the letter to Carter in "Audley near Battletown" in Frederick County. The letter is postmarked in Charlestown on 4 August. An annotation on the letter reads "1829 Judge Washington respecting the affairs of Genl Washingtons Estate."
