From John Marshall

My dear Sir

I have expected to hear from you since you have had an opportunity to look into the trunks and chests last sent up for the volume of letters containing those which have not been copied, and am uneasy at not receiving a letter from you. I have been apprehensive that you have been prevented by indisposition. Still, as I have not heard of your being sick I will flatter my self that some accident has prevented your looking into the trunks, or has prevented your writing. I am confident the volume is in one of them.

Will you have the goodness to obtain from Mr Small on my account five copies of my history of the colonies & retain one for yourself. Present one to my friend Mr Hopkinson & one to Mr Sergeant with my compliments & a request that they will receive them as a testimonial of my esteem & regard. One with my compliments to Mr Duponceau. It is in return for the book he sent me. You need not however tell him this. One to Mr Wayne. It is a compliment on account of his great attention to the publication of the Life of Washington. Tell him I have taken the precaution to take out a copy right for this volume at the instance of Mr Small to prevent the interference of others—not to affect him. Should he ever, which is not likely, wish to publish an edition as amended I will most cheerfully assent & aid him by correcting the few—very few typographical errors which have escaped the vigilance of Mr Small & making any trifling corrections which I may hereafter suppose necessary.

I have requested a copy to be presented with my compliments to Judge Peters. I hope it is done. Should it be otherwise I must ask the favor of you to superintend this little affair also.

Wishing you a pleasant session & of course good health for it. I am dear Sir yours truly

J Marshall

Ask Mr. Small to furnish me with eight copies of the history this February in Washington.
