Deed of Sale of John Augustine Washington's Slaves

     Know all Men by these Presents that I John Augustine Washington of the County of Westmoreland and Parish of Cople for and in Consideration of the natural Affection which I bear unto my Son Bushrod Washington of the County and Parish aforesaid as well as for and in consideration of five shillings to me in hand paid by the said Bushrod Washington before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. Have Given, Granted, Bargained sold and conveyed and by these presents Do Give, grant, Bargain, Sell and convey unto the said Bushrod Washington the following Negroe Slaves to wit, Daniel, Violet, Lett, Rippon and Dulcinea children of the said Violet, Will, Suck, Solomon, Bellow Charity children of the said Suck, Cate, Thomas,1 Doll, Bascow,2 children of the said Cate, Nathan child of the said Doll, Kizia, Laurence, Rosetta, Oliver, Mimy Nancy, Betty, & Sam, children of the said Mimy, Patience, Lewis, Adam, Alexander Graciany, Jemmy and Rachel children of the said Patience, Flora child of the said Rachel, David, Hannah, Celia, Isaac, Apphia & Frank children of the said Hannah, Motley, Dennis & Nelly children of the said Motley and Japheth, To Have and To Hold the said Negroe Slaves and their increase to him the said Bushrod Washington and his Heirs for Ever. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this Seventeenth day of October in the year of our Lord One thousand, Seven hundred and Eighty five.
