From Littleton Waller Tazewell

Dear Sir;

     An accident had occasion'd my absence from hence, at the time your letter of the 30th Ulto arrived here; and the intensity of the recent cold weather, kept me from home during its continuance, so that until yesterday, I did not receive it— Immediately it came to hand I called on the Cashier of the Virginia Bank, to see what arrangement I could make with him for the payment of the draft you now have, and any others you might hereafter obtain, from the President of the Dismal Swamp Canal Co., on that Bank, which should be payable in Carolina money— Mr Williamson, the Cashier of the Bank stated to me, that if you would send your draft inclused to him, and so enable him to receive this Carolina money from the Bank, he would immediately <c>onvert it into Virginia money for you, at the lowest rate of exchange at which the negotiation could be affected, and would place the proceeds to your credit in his Bank, from whence you could easily obtain the amount at any time, through any of the Banks of Alexandria or Washington, who would instantly cash your check upon him—And that you might pursue the same cause in relation to any future drafts of the same kind— This arrangement you will find prefectly safe and convenient, & it will be attended with no other loss or charges, than the difference in exchange between the Carolina & Virginia money, which loss is of course unavoidable— This difference is I believe at present between 6 & 7 per Cent, but it perpetually fluctuates like every other commodity in the market, Carolina papernot being here considerd as money, because their Banks do not pay specie. I hope to be in Washington myself early next week, and will then contribute any thing in my power to give additional facility to this operation, should you wish or require it— I remain with very great respect Dear Sir your mo: obdt servt

Littn W. Tazewell

P.S. The address of Mr Williamson Thomas Williamson Cashier of the Bank of Virginia at Norfolk.
