David Steuart Erskine, eleventh Earl of Buchan (1742–1829)
Bushrod Washington informed the Earl of Buchan of a bequeathment to the latter in George Washington's will.
Described by Sir Walter Scott as “a person whose immense vanity, bordering on insanity . . . eclipsed very considerable talents,” David Steuart Erskine was born on 1 June 1742 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He attended Saint Andrews, Edinburgh, and Glasgow universities before receiving a commission in the British army. Upon his father’s death in 1767, Erskine became the eleventh Earl of Buchan. He thereafter devoted himself to land and political reform.
