Description

Philip Barton Key, an uncle of Francis Scott Key, was born on 12 April 1757 near Charlestown, Maryland. He served in the United Corps of Maryland and Pennsylvania Loyalists during the Revolutionary War before traveling to England for legal study. Returning to Maryland in 1785, he read law under Gabriel Duvall, gained admittance to the bar, and practiced in Leonardtown and Annapolis.
