Francis Scott Key (1779–1843)

Description

Francis Scott Key, lawyer, poet, and author of "The Star Spangled Banner," was born on 1 August 1779 at Terra Rubra, the family plantation in present-day Carroll County, Maryland. After attending St. John's College, he read law under his uncle Philip Barton Key and opened a practice in Frederick. In 1802 he married Mary Tayloe Lloyd (1784–1859).
