John Fitzgerald was a friend of George Washington.

Description

John Fitzgerald, a native of Ireland, immigrated to America in 1769. He settled in Alexandria, Virginia, where he became a partner in a mercantile business and a friend of George Washington. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Continental Army officer and an aide-de-camp to Washington, earning his commander’s praise as "an Officer of unexceptionable merit." Wounded at the Battle of Monmouth, Fitzgerald left the army and in 1779 married Jane (Jenny) Digges (c.
