Description

Oliver Wolcott, cabinet member and governor, was born on 11 January 1760 in Litchfield, Connecticut. While a teenager, he served in the Continental Army and graduated from Yale. After passing the bar, he held a series of positions within the Connecticut state government before his appointment as auditor of the U.S. treasury. In 1795 Wolcott succeeded his political ally Alexander Hamilton as secretary of the treasury.
