Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette was born on 6 September 1757 in Chavaniac, France. Commissioned an officer at age thirteen, he married Marie Adrienne Françoise de Noailles in 1774; they had three children live to maturity. Lafayette was still a teenager when he first heard news of the American Revolution. He set sail for the colonies, arrived in Philadelphia in the summer of 1777, and offered to serve the patriot cause at his own expense.
