David Edwin (1776–1841)

Description

David Edwin, son of a comedic actor, was born in December 1776 in Bath, England. Young Edwin studied engraving in England and Holland before immigrating to Philadelphia in 1797. There he plied his trade, gaining notice for his engravings of portraits by Gilbert Stuart. Failing eyesight and monetary problems hampered his career, and he worked as a clerk and messenger in his later years.
