Gilbert Stuart (1755–1828)

Description

Gilbert Stuart, portraitist, was born on 3 December 1755 in Kingston, Rhode Island. He studied painting under Benjamin West (1738–1820) in London, where he won acclaim for an exhibit at the British Royal Academy in 1782. Returning to the U.S. a decade later, he worked as a portraitist in New York City and Philadelphia, with John Adams, John Jay, and Thomas Jefferson among his subjects.
