George Mason (17251792)

Description

George Mason, politician and Founding Father, was born on 11 December 1725 at Dogue's Neck, Fairfax County, Virginia. A planter by trade, he entered public service in his early twenties as a member of the Fairfax County Court. Thereafter he served in the House of Burgesses (1758–1761), composed the Fairfax Resolves (1774), sat in the House of Delegates (1776–1780), and drafted Virginia’s first state constitution (1776). Mason is best known for his Virginia Declaration of Rights, which inspired Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence.
