Nathanael Greene (17421786)

Description

Nathanael Greene, Revolutionary War general, was born on 7 August 1742 in Potowomut (Warwick), Rhode Island. A Quaker by birth, he worked at his father's iron foundry and served as deputy to the General Assembly. Greene married Catharine Littlefield (17551814) in 1774, the same year that he organized a militia company. Commissioned a brigadier general of the Continental Army in June 1775, he quickly became one of George Washington's most trusted advisers.
