Horatio Stephenson Sprigg (1783–1847)

Description

Horatio Stephenson Sprigg was born on 28 January 1783 in Wheeling, present-day West Virginia. After a multi-year stint as a midshipman in the Mediterranean, he settled in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. A successful sugar planter, Sprigg also served in the War of 1812 and sat in the state legislature. In 1828 that body elected him general of state militia. Sprigg married twice: to Elizabeth Hall (1792–1824) in 1813 and to Frances Jones Senter (1803–1880) in 1826. He had two children with the former and four with the latter.
