Rev. Richard Peters (c. 1704–1776)
Richard Peters, minister, lawyer, and uncle of Judge Richard Peters, was born in Liverpool, England. He studied law before becoming a deacon and priest in the Church of England. Public discovery that his marriage to one Miss Stanley was bigamous—a teenaged Peters had wed a servant some years prior—resulted in his immigration to Philadelphia, where he gained admission to the bar and served as secretary of the provincial land office (1737–60).
