From Robert Lewis
Fredericksbg Decr 14th 1[827]
My dear Sir,
I hope you will not think me disrespectful, or unmindfull of your late communication in regard to the claim against me on the part of the Estate of Genl Washington— I can assure you it has been a source of considerable pain to me, as well as to the Executors— I calculated upon drafts on a certain Philip P. Mays of Richmond, from my agent in the State of Ohio, to afford me the means of discharging this claim— they were drawn payable on sight, and his verbal acceptance was taken, by a friend of mine in Richmond, authorised to receive, without my consent or knowledge, and my agent in Ohio, discharged by my receipt in full— Since which, I have been constrained to order suit, and must wait the issue— Mr Moses Poor, Auctioneer of Washington City, will, (if he has not already) some funds of mine in his hands, which I shall authorise my brother to collect & pay agreeable to your desire— there will be still a balance due, which must come thro' the medium of some bank, & my brother has promissed to become the endorser. If I cannot make the arrangement with one of our Banks here, I shall go to Woodlawn as soon as possible, and endeavor to obtain the needful in Alexa. Yr truly affectionate relation
