From John N. Ashton

Dear Sir

I was handed a letter by Mr Augt Fitzhugh a few weeks since addressed by yourself to him, & afterwards answered by me on the Admn. of my Brother Burdett, in which address you as the Executor of the late General Washington proposed a moble by which your Testators Estate could be settled up to the second Legatees, & not hearing which proposition has been acceded to by them—have taken the liberty of addressing you a few—lines upon that subject, & my great wish to settle up my Brothers affairs urges me to this measure of hearing from you as soon as you may make it convenient to answer my letter which I hope you will do at your leisure— I would also ask your friendly opinion as relates to my fathers interest in that Estate in right of his Children—Burdett, & Nancy, who both died with out issue—the one 1810 and the other 1812 And as I suppose leaving my father their sole Heir as they made no Will whatever, & its further appearing that Charles who was an heir of Ann Ashtons also, & who died in Septr 1799 & the late General in the Dcr following & my father contending for his Son Charleses interest from that Estate was given by my Brother Burdett & Judge Fitzhugh for whatever claim he might be entitled to in right of his Son six hundred dollars in three, & six Months equal payments together with their settling with the Estate for several little articles purchased by him at the sale of your Testators Estate & which certificate is now in my possession— I am thus induced to make the enquiry from my being the Exr of my father & his affairs—with the Legatees not being finally arranged & my great desire to close my Accounts in general— you will I hope Dr Sir therefore excuse me for these reasons which I have now given you. I remain yours respectfully

John N. Ashton
