To George Lewis
Mount Vernon Jany 26. 1804
Dear Sir
I now enclose you a deed for your part of the General's estate sold me, which I will thank you to execute as soon as you possibly can, lest accidents to you or I might produce embarrassments which might be unpleasant to the survivor. I have annexed to the deed a Commission for the privy examination of Cousin Lewis, and you will have to get two magistrates to attend at your house to take it. You will fill up the Commission with the names of the Justices who attend, as also the date of the commission at the bottom which make the day after the date of the deed, which you will also insert. The blanks left in the Certificate on the back of the Commission are to be filled up with the names of the Justices, and the date, which you will make the same with the date of the Commission & of course the day after the date of the deed. As soon as the deed is properly executed, you will please carry it to your County Courts, acknowledge it & have it certified so as to be proved in the General Court. This done, be so good as to enclose the deed, with the Certificate of the Clerk to me by post or other safe conveyance.
I wish you would remind cousin Saml of sending me a Commission from the Court of Westmoreland for the privy examination of Mr Washington, & I will immediately send him a deed for Bushfield properly executed & certified. I am anxious to have this business done before any accident to you or myself, as in case of our deaths, our widows & infant heirs would have to do it, if they pleased, or might produce a law suit if they refused. With Our Love to Cousin L. I am Dear Sir Sincerely & affectly Yrs
Bushrod Washington
P.S. Another reason for my haste in obtaining your deed, is, that many of the deeds to persons who have purchased lands from us cannot be compleatly made, unless your conveyance is first made to me or without your personal attendance.
Not being positive as to the Christian name of Cousin Lewis, I have left it blank in the deed, in the Commission & in the Certificate— you will please as you go through them to fill up all the blanks left for her name. The deed must be executed before 3 Witnesses.
ALS, CSmH. The cover was addressed to Lewis at "Marmion near King George Courthouse." BW, marking the letter as "paid" and signing with his initials, noted next to the address that "The post master at King George will please forward this."
