To Hannah Bushrod Washington

Dr & Hond Madam

The carriage returned the day before yesterday by which I recd your letter & the distressing information of your being still very unwell in consequence of the cold you carried with you from hence. I hope that with care & the proper application of medicines, you will soon remove your Complaint. I recd also your letter from Genl Spotswoods mentioning your intention of proceeding to Mr Washingtons in the carriage—untill I recd that letter, I was very uneasy from an apprehension that some of you had either fallen sick, or that some accident had happened to you on the road. I was much relieved by hearing from you, & so far from disaproving the Step you were about to take, I was very happy that it was the means of contributing to your wishes. I should have been sorry, if you had hesitated to avail yourself of my services or the use of my property when either could rescue you from distress of any kind. the inconvenience experienced by us is a meer trifle when compared with the satisfaction resulting to us, by having furnished an accomodation to a much loved Mother. Nancy setts off Tomorrow, in consequence of her hearing last Night that the servant & horses which she wrote to her Mama to send to Genl Spotswood to meet her on the 11th are still there waiting for her. I shall follow her in a few days after. I never was more surprised or pleased than at this visit of my brother. he step'd in upon the close of a white back dinner & we all doubted at first whether it was not his spirit come to mock us with the show of a visit. His Company has made us exceedingly happy— I wish he had Joined us, whilst you & the park Gate friend were here. I think that nothing will occur to prevent our visiting you on our way home. I shall be much disappointed if any (at present) unexpected event should turn up to defeat our present plan— I think none will. Your phisic Box goes With Mr Maund by whom Nancy writes. Hoping for many, many returns of the visit which has made us so happy & with wishes for your health & felicity I am most truly my dr Mother your dutiful & affectionate Son
