From Hannah Bushrod Washington
Bushfd April 13—[17]98
My dearest Bushrod—
Since you left this I recd two letters from your Brother telling me that his wife was he hoped (& indeed to all appearence) better that they had declined going to Alexd. & beg'd I would directly go up I packed up to do so, & Nancy was taken sick which prevented me for 7 or eight days—the day previous to that of our seting off— he sent down to desire I would not set out as his poor wife was growing much worse & most desirous of being at Bushfield last Tuesday week the messenger left them in Alexd. from which place they intended down as soon as a proper Vessel could be procured— the wind has been unfavorable for some days— however I cant help spying up the river often— I fear—greatly fear the worst— God only knows the heartachs I suffer on the account of my darling children—poor dear Hannah— she is a most deserving, amiable woman should she leave us, I shudder to reflect on the forlorn situation of my dear son & his six helpless children— I wish if possible that yourself & Nancy [c]ould make a trip even if is a flying one here—that we may be altogether— I have not heard from you for some time—but trust in God that yourself & my dear Nancy are well— Doll has spun only one lb cotten— I sent her another with a hurrying message & desired Mr Shelton to see to it— I will have it whittend when done— please tell Nancy that it is very much my wish to weave her fringe if I can command as much time—for I assure you for two long years past, I have scarcely had it in my power to do any sort of business for myself or my friends, except in a most melancholy way—that you may both injoy Heavens choicest blessing most ardently prays—my greatly beloved Son—your most Affe. & lovg parent
H. Washington
Nancy begs her very Affe. duty to you & her Aunt.
