Benjamin Henry Boneval Latrobe (1764–1820)
Latrobe was a friend of Bushrod Washington, who provided the architect with a letter of introduction for a 1796 visit to his uncle at Mount Vernon.
Benjamin Henry Boneval Latrobe, one of the first professional architects in the United States, was born on 1 May 1764 to a Moravian family in Yorkshire, England. He worked as an apprentice architect before immigrating to Virginia in 1796. Latrobe’s first break came the following year, when his design for a Virginia penitentiary won out over several plans—including one by Thomas Jefferson.
