From Thomas Peter
George Town 8th Decr 1827
Dr Sir,
your Letter of the 28th Ulto I have now before me & but for Mr Swans absence from the City would have been answered in due time.
A few days after the receipt of a Letter from you on the same subject Mr Lewis came to my house & when he paid Mrs Custis, he told me there would be a Balance coming to Mrs Peter— when I received your Letter I was not a little surprised to find I was a debtor.
I saw Mr Lewis this Spring and asked him if I had been allowed in my a/c for the two Lots I purchased at the Sale of the Executors of Genl Washn & Interest from that time to the present— he told me I had not— I then Stated the Circumstances to him, he directed1 me to Mr Swan & Taylor without delay— I stated my case to them in writing, the former assured me it would be attended to. & allowed to me— I called yesterday to see Mr Swan to know if he & Mr Tayloe had decided in my case. he told me they had not, he was then going to Alexa. would see Mr Tayloe & let me know on his return what they had decided on— In the mean time advised me to write to you.
For your information I will state my claim.
I purchased two Lots at the Sale of the Est. of Genl Washington one a water & the other a back Lot in Washn City— I think the Amount was about $800— Your Agent & Nephew Mr George Washington sold this property to Mr Glover made Deeds recd & paid over the Money to the Executors.
Mr Glover sold the Lots to Mr Wm McClairy & he is now in possession of them. Take this Transaction from my a/c & I shall be a considerable Creditor— I shall be happy to have my a/c as I have never yed had it & I hope soon it will be settled— I think Mr Lewis must have forgot to acquaint you with this affair, as you have not mentioned it in either of your Letters. I am Dr Sir your most Obt Servt

ALS, ViMtvL: Peter Family Papers. Peter addressed the letter to BW at Mount Vernon and postmarked in Georgetown on 10 December. BW endorsed the letter and wrote the note, "ansd on the 28th that he had been credited what the lots sold for & interest and this confd by the decree of this court & that the balance stated in my former is decreed against him & again urging payt of it." In the middle of this note, diagonally, BW wrote the number "1716.97."
1. At first Peter used the word "advised" in place of the word "directed" but he crossed it out.
