From Hannah Bushrod Washington
Parkgate 2d May—1796
My dearest Bushrod-
I got to this place last thirsday & found your dear sister with a fever cover'd up, her fevers are pretty constant & cough bad— Mr Fithugh who is now here, tells us that he saw you in Fredericksburg a few days ago— I hope you left my dear Nancy well— As I understand that she is not with you, nex saturday1 we shall leave Parkgate & get to Dumfries, where we intend to stay till monday morning— intirely on the account of seeing you— we all are most anxious for that happiness— your dear sick sister very particularly so, before she sets off on her long trip‑ it is uncertain how far we may go or when we shall return—but if traveling either by land or sea appears to agree with her, shall certainly go to Boston. I am now writing in her chamber & she with a fever as usual— she desires me to give you her most affe. love & entreats if you can possibly leave your business without injury to yourself that you'll be in Dumfries on saturday evening or sunday— I would not trust this to post— but have set my servants off with my carriage & horses home with orders to stop at Chathem & for Jerry to carry this over to you I have much my dearest Bushrod to say to you but time will not admit of it now— I will not take my leave of you in this letter, as I hope to see you in Dumfries—2 your Brother and his wife & the youngest child left Bushfield with me last Sunday— I came straight on, & he went next day to our election— & was to stay at Haywood 2 or 3 days & then proceed here to see our dear Mildred— we expect to see them everyday— Bushrod & Jane went to Loudoun with Mrs Harriet Turberville some time ago‑ Richard & John are here with me— God Almighty ever bless you & dear Nancy in which prayer Mildred sincerly joins me— Mr Lee will write to you himself— be assured my dear dear Child of the unalterable love of you ever affe & lovg parent.

ALS, ViMtvL: Historic Manuscript Collection. Hannah Bushrod Washington addressed the letter to "Bushrod Washington Esqr at present in Fredericksburg" and wrote that the letter would be delivered in the care of Jerry.
1. Hannah originally wrote "Friday" in place of Saturday but crossed it out.
2. After the dash following the word Dumfries, Hannah began to write "I will be" but crossed it out.
