To Bushrod Washington

My dear Sir

I have received your letter and am very happy to be informed that you will devote a part of this summer to a perusal of the letters. I believe it will be proper to make some deductions for the purpose of avoiding repetition but several letters may be withdrawn or abridged without affecting the number of volumes. I could not estimate accurately the number of printed pages which would be required to comprehend the manuscript, but my conjecture was that the volumes would be rather larger than is to be wished.

If Mr Small is broke, for which I shall be truely sorry, you will much oblige me if you can enquire what arrangement is made respecting my history. I suppose the unsold volumes will be transferred to some other bookseller; but I shall be glad to hear something farther on the subject. I am just setting out for Fauquier. Yours truely

J. Marshall
