Memo. for Judge Washington
In the Account of the Executors of Genl Washington against Capt. George S. Washington which was enclosed to me, I find the following charges. viz.:
1803. |
||
June 6. | To lot No. 7. in Alexandria | $1244.55.0 |
To lot No. 8. do |
1212.0.0 |
I can find no title for these lots among the papers of Capt. Washington, nor has Mrs Todd any recollection of ever hearing Capt. W. mention that he had made such purchases or of having owned any such property in Alexandria, more are there any Receipts among his papers for taxes on them. Judge W. will be so good as to inform me, whether any deed or deeds were made & recorded for the lots, Whether Capt. W. sold or disposed of them in his lifetime—Whether they have been sold for taxes—Who is now in possession of them & under what claim or title—What is their present value—or any other information respecting them.
There is also a charge for lot No. 14 in Washington, I found receipts for several years taxes paid on this lot & I continued to pay the taxes until within two years past, when I was informed that the taxes were paid & the lot claimed by some person who set up a title under a decree of some Court of Chancery. Any information on this subject will be thankfully received by His friend
