From Selah Strong Woodhull
New York, January 20. 1825.
Sir,
In consequence of instructions from the Committee of Arrangements of the American Bible Society, I have the honour to inform you, that the next annual meeting of the Society will be held in this City, on Thursday, the twelfth day of May next. The Managers would rejoice to see you on that interesting occasion, & respectfully request to be honoured with your presence, as a Vice President of the Society. Yet, I am instructed to say, that, should it be inconvenient for you to attend, the Managers are deeply sensible of their obligations to you, from your continuing to hold the office of a Vice President; they rejoice in the confidence of your warm attachment to the Society; & they hope that it will long be favoured with your influence & approbation. It is most gratifying & cheering to them, that so many of the great & the good in our Country are numbered among the Vice Presidents of the American Bible Society. With the greatest respect, I have the honour to be, Your Obt Sevt
S. S. Woodhull, Sec. for Domestic Correspondence of the American Bible Society.
ALS, ViMtvL: Bushrod Washington Family Papers. Woodhull originally addressed the letter to the "Hon. Bushrod Washington, Washington City, District of Columbia." However, "Washington City" was crossed out and replaced with "Alexandria," written in a different hand. The letter was postmarked twice, first in New York on 22 Jan. and then in Washington City on 24 January. BW endorsed the letter.
