From Robert Lewis
Fredg Decr 19th 1826
My dear Sir,
Your letter of the 5th inst. came duly to hand, and I hasten to reply, which wou'd have been done many days since, had I been at home— An accident ocurred to me, whilst on a visit to my daughter Bassett, by the horses taking fright, from the attempt of a dog to bite them, and running away with the carriage— upsetting & jeopardizing the life of myself & family— My left arm was broken in two places— my wife's head badly cut with the broken window glass, besides bruises; & my daughter & Mr Bassett both very materially injured. I got home on sunday with great difficulty, and it is with great inconvenience that I can write at all.
In regard to the acot exhibited by the commissioners against me in favor of the Estate of Genl Washington, there must certainly be some mistake, which could only be rectified by my personal attendance, before you & my brother— I am made debtor to the Estate of Genl Washington on acot my brother Feilding, (from your letter), the sum of $171:77— This charge cannot be correct, if I am credited by the balance due W. A. Washington, & paid to the order of yourself, by assignment from W. A. W— to Elias B. Caldwell of Washington City— I hope no steps will be taken to coerce payment, until we can have a meeting, these arrangements will be made thro' one of our banks, to pay whatever may be justly due— My situation at present will not enable me to hunt up vouchers, but if my acot could be drawn off, & my Brother could spare the time to come down all things could be amicably settled. Please to let my brother see this letter and believe me truly your Affectionate relation
Robt Lewis
P.[S.] I would have written to my brother, but find myself too much exausted. R. L.
ALS, ViMtvL: Bushrod Washington Family Papers. Lewis addressed the letter to BW in Mount Vernon. BW endorsed the letter and added a note: "4 Jany 1827 answered stating that the credit spoken of was allowed by the master & that there was no mistake, but if there was, it wd not be in the power of the Exect. to correct it, a decree having passed which must be complied with, & pressing as early payt of the <idaim>.
