Description

James Bankhead Sr. was born in Scotland. A member of the British Navy, he immigrated to Virginia, settling in Westmoreland County as a practicing physician. In 1738 he married Eleanor (Elinor) Monroe (c. 1720–1754), an aunt of James Monroe. Of their six children, three became doctors.
