Description

Matthew Clarkson was born in New York City on 17 October 1858. He joined the Continental Army at the start of the Revolutionary War, serving under Benedict Arnold and Benjamin Lincoln (1733–1810). He was also an assistant secretary of war under the latter. Following the war, Clarkson was a regent of the University of the State of New York, president of the New York City Hospital, vice president of the American Bible Society, president of the Bank of New York, and commander of state militia.
